Chipiona, Cadiz in Spain is has very strong historic ties to the sea, fishermen and it´s famous lighthouse. In times of Pomponio Mela they spoke of a lighthouse in the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, and this lighthouse became the origin of this lovely town called Chipiona in the Costa de la luz of Andalusia. The first findings that reflect life in Chipiona, Spain date back to the II century b.c. during the Roman era, and for this reason everything that happened earlier is just legend as there is no proof. In the Middle ages there are also writings by San Agustin´s disciples brought from Africa with the Virgen de la Regla that they disembarked in Chipiona, and from then on has been the patron saint of this city.
The virgin that these mariners brought became the patron saint and it´s image was hidden during the muslim era and was not shown again until the 14th century, once this municipality had been reconquered by Ferdinand the 111 the Saint. Regardless the final conquering did not occur until 1265 by Alonso X El Sabio.
Centuries later we find another important date worth mentioning in the history of Chipiona, Cadiz. It happened in the year 1755 when the violent earthquake that destroyed Lisbon and a great part of the spanish Costa de la luz. Chipiona was hit hard by this earthquake and with a seaquake that provoked flooding. This tragic even took place in November of 1755 and today this day is conmemorated so that it will never happen again.
In 1869 the final construction the Lighthouse that began being built in Chipiona in 1867 was finished. It is the most important emblem in the city. It has a height of 70 meters, which is visible as far away as 20 kms of coast. It is also one of the most important in Europe, and the biggest in Spain. This lighthouse guides sailors so that they will not crash against the Salmedina rocks when the pass through to access the Guadalquivir River.
In the Marina, Beach Promenade, and urbanizations nearby you´ll find many developers that have invested and helped Chipiona rise with a great economical growth in the last years. Today tourism, fishing, and floriculture are the most important economic sources in this city. |
